Hey so my partner is really into DnD and is teaching me a bit about it, and I thought it sounded really fun and would be a great way to connect with them, so I asked my friend if I could join her campaign and she said yes!
Except now I’m freaking out because I join in 2 weeks and I’m incredibly underprepared.
How do I create a character?
What are the rules?
What are the unspoken (mostly social) rules?
Most importantly what do I need to start playing?
What do I need to buy, and where can I find it for cheap?
Where’s the best place for me to find resources to learn everything I need to know?
Also we’re mostly playing online over discord so I don’t know how that changes things?
Really any help related to DnD would be appreciated! I usually spend at least a month researching something before I do it so I’m very stressed.
Also I am utterly terrified because I only know my one friend in this campaign and I don’t want to embarrass myself, step on toes, or look stupid. (Though my friend says not to worry because they all don’t know what their doing.)
Hey, I don't have any dnd experience but do have some experience with other ttrpgs so can give some more general advice.
For character creation there are usually guides online but if in doubt ask your friend or whoever is the DM.
Most the time players don't need to know the rules very well as it is ultimately the DMs job to tell you whether or not you can do something. However, my preferred way to learn the basics is to watch actual play video such as critical roll, dimension 20 or chaotic neutral. This should also give you some indication of the social rules but these will differ by group.
Given that you're not playing in person you probably don't need to buy much except maybe dice but I'd double check with your friend or DM. I get my dice mainly from Etsy and if you don't mind what colour they are you can get mystery dice for a discount.
Not sure where the best place for resources will be as like I said I don't play dnd.
Overall, try your best not to stress about it and don't be afraid to ask other people in the group for advice. The DM is typically the best person to go to as they are usually the most knowledgeable. Also it's okay if you look stupid initially especially if no one knows what they're doing; the aim is to have fun not run a flawless campaign.
