Does anyone have any tips for GCSEs? I'm currently waiting for an autism assessment and in year 10 and I am struggling with it all and my school isn't that helpful so I was wondering if anyone else had some advice?
I'm in very much the same predicament. I'm year 10 in the US, I have accomodations for some things but I'm waiting on asd and ADHD official diagnosis (though I've already been told that I'm autistic by a psychiatrist). I would say talk to your teachers about accomodations you would find helpful, and the reason why (wearing earplugs, having fidgets, different testing room, etc.) I'm starting exams this week and I'm so stressed but I'd say just prepare yourself and rewrite all your notes really helps me learn them.
I am in a very similar position to you at the moment. I am in year 10 and awaiting an asd and adhd assessment (with that being said i do have an FND and functional tics diagnosis). I really recommend talking to your head of year and asking for the accomodations you need (for example, a room on your own, extra time etc). As long as you can explain why you need it (eg: you get overwhelmed in crowds) then a diagnosis is not required to get accommodations. Granted a diagnosis makes it easier to get them but it is not required. Hope this helps. Have a good day.
It's very difficult when your school isn't helpful! I was in the covid year for GCSEs but I'm in my 2nd year of uni now so I'd like to say I'm pretty used to exams by now.
Since you're in year 10, honestly learn the past papers. I know all teachers say this but it is genuinely so useful. They often just copy questions and tweak words each year so if you've already done the questions you'll breeze by.
I would ask the school if you'd be allowed any fidget toys (silent ones of course) in your exams as that non-obtrusive for other students. You'll have mocks so use those as a way to get used to the new environment of an exam hall (if you are in there).
If you have any questions feel free to ask! It's nice that you're identifying traits that early on. I got diagnosed with autism when I was 17 so quite late! I hope you get your assessment soon :)
