Hi!! I was recently diagnosed with Autism! I would like to know more about it since I'm still new to the community and managing it! I've delt with sensory overload my whole life and when I found out about what I'd been experiencing, it was a moment of revelation that made my whole life make sense!
I think I have autism or I'm on the neurodivergent scale but I don't know how to go about a diagnosis! I've always dealt with sensory and social issues my whole life and as a kid overloads were "tantrums" or "overreactions" which I always found frustrating because I could never help it! Does anyone have any advice on how to go about trying to get a test or diagnosis at 18? Thankyou x
There are a lot of online resources that you can get diagnosed over, one of them which I have heard is good is Wilderwood Equine Therapy evaluations but they only do assments for women. In America though they take a while to see someone in person because there are alot of waitlists for autism assments. Another resource that I found was the Big Autistic Resource Guide from the youtuber mom on the spectrum, whohas some resources for autism diagnoses too.
I highly recommend using https://embrace-autism.com/ as your starting point. Their various tests helped solidify that I definitely needed to go in for a neuropsych evaluation, which is what they're called in the U.S.
hi i'm fascinated by asd as it is so different between people! i was just wondering what the main benefits of pursuing a diagnosis are if you are showing autistic traits. thanks :]
So I am diagnosed autistic (diagnosed at 17) and here were a few reasons I persued a diagnosis:
Increased understanding of myself. This was the main one tbh. I was in therapy and it wasn't helping certain areas and I wanted to know if I even could "fix" these areas or if I needed to learn how to cope. This was with my sensory issues and communication in particular.
Access to accommodations. Although I was ready diagnosed with depression and anxiety, I have been able to access so many more accommodations at uni due to just my autism diagnosis. It also helps people immediately understand what you may need.
Understanding from those around me. It has helped so much that I can just say that I am autistic and leave an overwhelming situation. When I have done this previously, people think I am being rude by not wanting to hang out with them but in reality I'm just overwhelmed.
There are a lot more reasons but here's a few. Let me know if you have any more questions no matter how big or small :)
